  • The steps looked like they had been there for hundreds of years -- and they kept going up and up . . .
  • Across the valley, workers were harvesting grapes in the terraced vineyards.
  • We wanted to get a view of the sea, so we followed a small path through an olive grove . . .
  • . . . which shortly came out to a narrow path overlooking the coastline. Corniglia is in the center, Monterosso al Mare is in the background. We sat and took in the view, had a snack . . .
  • . . . admired the grapes hanging heavy on the vines . . .
  • . . . and watched the excursion boats anchored below.
  • That afternoon we took the train to Monterosso, the only Cinque Terre village where there is a real beach. We swam in the sea and sunbathed -- very relaxing.
  • Then we took the ferry back to Manarola, stopping at Vernazza . . .
  • . . . and Corniglia on the way.
  • That afternoon we took a walk along the trail on the hillside opposite where we were staying, where we could look back and see our apartment -- the bottom of the yellow building, with the entrance to the right at the base of the red building.
  • We watched the sunset . . .
  • . . . and looked forward to coming back to this amazing place.
  • Up early the next morning to pack up and watch the activity on the hillside opposite. Couples tending their gardens . . .

  • Riomaggiore is one of the larger villages and seems to have more permanent residents. According to legend, settlement of Riomaggiore dates far back to the 8th century, when Greek religious refugees came here to escape persecution by the Byzantine emperor.
  • In the early morning the streets were crowded with delivery trucks . . .
  • . . . and the locals were out buying their fruit and vegetables for the day . . .
  • . . .including zucchini with the blossoms attached.
  • Every square inch of space in the Cinque Terre villages is used for cultivating vegetables.
