  • We browsed in some of the boutiques and enotecas. . .

  • But what caught our eyes the most was the colors and textures of the city's streets and doorways . . .
  • . . . which were all decorated with perfectly tended geraniums, impatiens, begonias, and ivies.

  • Then we drove a few miles south to the Abbazia di Sant'Antimo, a beautiful 12th century Romanesque abbey where the monks celebrate their canonical hours with Gregorian chants, scheduled several times a day. We missed the late morning chanting so . . .
  • . . . we found a spot in a nearby vineyard overlooking the Abbey to have a picnic.
  • After our picnic we went back to the Abbey to hear the Gregorian chanting (no photos during the chanting), as the light streamed through the high windows.
  • The landscape surrounding the Abbey, just outside the town of Castelnuovo del'Abate.
  • Late that afternoon Lou dropped Kathy off at La Foce gardens . . .
  • . . . and while Kathy toured the gardens he planned to photograph the area in the late afternoon light, but ended up spending an hour trying to get gas in a nearby town, as the gas gauge got lower and lower. Not the way he wanted to spend the "golden hour"!
  • That night we ate at a local restaurant in San Quirico recommended by our innkeeper, Miguel. Good dinner . . .
  • better vino, . .
  • . . . and excellent dolce.
  • The next morning the fog filled the valley again.
  • We got an early start for Montalcino, a hilltop city (yes, it is walled) that is most famous for the wines produced in the area -- one of Italy's most esteemed reds, Brunello di Montalcino.
  • The streets were quiet as we entered the city.
