  • We started our trip in Barcelona on the Calle de Portaferissa, the busy street in Barri Gotic (the Gothic Quarter) where Hannah lives.
  • Hola Hannah! It was great to see our daughter after more than 6 months!
  • After a tour of the neighborhood, including the Cathedral of Barcelona, we were off to see another church, Gaudi's Sagrada Familia.
  • The Sagrada Familiia, has been under construction since 1882 and is still only half completed.
  • The church combines Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau styles and has been described as the "most extraordinary personal interpretation of Gothic architecture since the Middle Ages."

  • The outside of the building is similarly fantastic, with several very different facades -- the Nativity façade is dedicated to the birth of Jesus.

  • Construction goes on and is expected to be complete in 2026, the centenary of Gaudi's death.
  • From the Sagrada went to visit Park Guell, another Gaudi's inspired destination.
  • The park was originally part of a housing site in the early 1900s. Gaudi built a home there, which is now the Gaudi Muesum, but then the entire site was acquired by the city as a park.

  • The park overlooks the city and provides a great view of the Sagrada Familia.

  • The next day we walked over to Hannah's through Plaza Cataluna, one of the main plazas at the entrance to the Gothic Quarter. . .
  • and down La Rambla, the pedestrian way through the heart of the old city.
