The trail followed a stream valley . . .

  • Our destination for the night -- a shelter in the rain forest.
  • After arriving at the shelter.
  • Time to relax after our hike. Then we had dinner and an evening hike - complete with bats, tree frogs, and tarantulas. After a full day we crawled into our cozy tent for the night.
  • After breakfast the next morning we headed back down the mountain.
  • This time it was a two-toed sloth who greeted us at Hacienda Baru. Actually, they are noctural so he was asleep.
  • The next morning I took an early walk and met this white-nosed coati on the trail toward the beach. Coatis are a distant cousin of the raccoon.
  • After taking a walk to the beachk where it was about 85 degrees at 9:00 AM, we decided to spend our last night up in the (cool) mountains, where we would be closer to the airport and also at a place where we might see the Resplendant Quetzal, one of Costa Rica's rarest birds. Here we are stopping at our favorite fruit stand along the way.
  • Driving up to the highest point on the Pan American highway -- about 10,000 feet.
  • After dropping down into a narrow valley on a steep, winding road we arrived at our last destination, Trogon Lodge, a paradise of lush tropical vegetation . . .
  • . . .and comfortable cabinas built into the hillside.
  • Trogon Lodge is at an elevation of 7,000 feet. After leaving the tropical heat, it was quite a surprise to find woodstoves lit in the dining room! This was a place we would love to go back to.
  • The food was excellent!
  • Hannah got into relaxation mode . . .
  • . . .while Kathy and I took a walk on the trails.
  • The trail followed a stream valley . . .
  • . . . it was a beautiful place to spend our last evening.
  • One last place for Kathy to check out the local flora.
  • .. . and more flora.
  • On our last morning, Kathy and I went with a guide to another lodge nearby to look for the Quetzal.
  • And we were rewarded with a great view of a pair of Quetzals in a nearby tree. Here's the male, with its long tail that attracts the female during breeding season.
