  • A white-faced monkey near the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, one of the many unforgettable sights of our Costa Rica trip.
  • We arrived in San Jose, Costa Rica at 9:00 PM on Feb. 23rd and spent that night at the local Best Western. Our first stop after leaving the hotel the next day was a farmer's market in San Ramon. We always like to check out farmers markets when we are in new places.
  • Kathy and Hannah sampling the local treats.
  • A typical scene along the roadside -- Costa Rican's stop whenever and wherever to visit a fruit stand or other roadside attraction.
  • Arenal volcano, an active volcano that erupts frequently day and night.
  • Our first destination, Rancho Margot - a self-sufficient organic ranch near the vilage of El Castillo.
  • The cabinas at Rancho Margot. Ours is the one to the left of the big tree.
  • Kathy and Hannah on the porch of our cozy cabina. We're glad to be here!
  • Each cabina has its own porch with hammock and rocking chairs.
  • The next morning we had breakfast in the Rancho Margot restaurant. I was surprised when the milk was hot -- but then learned that it had been milked that morning and heated to pasteurize it.
  • Then it was off on our tour of the ranch, led by our guide Gustavo.
  • The view of Lake Arenal from our porch.
  • Rancho Margot's gardens where they grow much of the vegetables for the ranch. They also produce all of their own power from a small hydroelectric plant and will be producing methane from pigs for cooking and heating hot water.
  • Then we were off on our horse back and hike to the waterfall with Gustavo. Kathy and I had not been on a horse in 30 years!
  • Our route took us through rivers and up steep hillsides into the rainforest.
  • Then we crossed the river and walked up a side stream to this beautiful waterfall.
  • We walked up to the waterfall and climbed into a cave behind the falls.
  • Gustavo showing us the way back.
  • The water was cool and felt great!
  • Gustavo had packed a lunch which we ate by the stream.
