At Monteverde (which means green mountains -- just like Vermont) we hired a guide to take us through the cloud forest. Dulci was an excellent birder and very knowledgable about the ecology of the area. She worked for the Friends of the Monteverde Cloud Forest, an organization devoted to protecting the cloud forest reserve and conserving additional land to add to the reserve.

  • On our way up to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve -- the countryside was rolling and cleared for grazing and agriculture.
  • A village on the way up to Monteverde.
  • Coffee plants under cultivation.
  • Coffee plantations on the steep hillsides.
  • The steep road went from bad to worse to awful -- typical for Costa Rica. Sometimes we were crawling along in four wheel drive at 5-10 mph for large stretches.
  • Finally we arrived at the University of Georgia's San Luis Research Station . . .
  • . . .a beautiful campus in a valley outside the town of Santa Elena . . .
  • . . . with small classroom buildings . . .
  • . . . and students studying tropical ecology.
  • Our cabina was very comfortable and outside on the deck . . .
  • . . . a white faced monkey was waiting for us . . .
  • . . . looking a bit cranky . . .
  • . . . but he was mostly curious what we were doing in his back yard.
  • We ate dinner that night with the students and volunteers. Excellent food!
  • The next morning Kathy and I took a bird walk with one of the volunteer guides, David, a botanist from North Carolina.
  • We were on the edge of the cloud forest, and the mist was clinging to the hillsides.
  • We left San Luis headed for the cloud forest and here's one of the first signs we encountered . . . huh?
