Our route took us around Lake Arenal, a hyrdoelectric resevoir which produces a significant portion of Costa Rica's electricity.

  • After the ride back it was hammock time -- we were tired!
  • After dinner, our host Jose gave Hannah her first salsa lesson.
  • The next day we visited the Arenal Hanging Bridges, a trail in the rain forest with . . .
  • . . . hanging suspension bridges over the stream valleys, providing great view of the rainforest . . .
  • . . . the Arenal Volcano and . . .
  • . . . waterfalls. The next bridge is at the very top of the picture.
  • At the end of the trail we heard a loud rustling in the trees above and saw a band of spider monkeys moving through the canopy.
  • After watching the spider monkeys, we heard even more noise and a group of howler monkeys appeared, munching on leaves as they moved through. Quite a sight!
  • Back at Rancho Margot, it's Kathy's turn in the hammock.
  • The next morning, our last at Rancho Margot, we relaxed for a while . . .
  • . . .watched the yellow billed toucans . . .
  • . . . and then said our goodbyes to the Rancho Margot staff, who had been so helpful and kind to us during our stay.
  • Hannah told Jose she would be back for more Salsa lessons!
  • And then we were on our way . . .
  • . . .down the road a typical scene . . .
  • . . . the school in El Castillo . . .
  • . . . and soccer of course.
  • Our route took us around Lake Arenal, a hyrdoelectric resevoir which produces a significant portion of Costa Rica's electricity.
  • Another important source of electricity is wind power, here on a ridegline at the western end of the lake. Between hyrdo and wind power, the country generates a surplus of electricity, which is exported to neighboring countries.
  • Scenes along the way - school children in Tilleran.
